Section from consolidated rules (In progress, if you feel like reviewing/proof reading, let me know on PM):

"2.2.5.2 Falling Prone

Infantry units may elect to “hit the dirt” by falling prone. Units may only fall prone in non trench, non strongpoint hexes and while unpinned. Place a “Prone” marker on the unit. CT units and MG platoons may not fall prone. Prone occurs either before the 1st troop movement phase (FTMP) or after moving on 2nd foot troop movement phase. If before the 1st FTMP the unit is crawling (A:2.2.5.3) Unit that begins 1st FTMP prone may elect to stand up by removing the marker prior movin the unit.

2.2.5.2.1 Effects of Prone

Prone Unit receives +1 modifier for SAFA. Unit in Prone has it’s MR increased by 1 while prone.
Prone unit can not spot more than into adjacent hexes unless enemy unit is firing. Firing unit can be spotted up to 10 hexes away. Prone unit has it’s FS reduced by 1.
Pinned effects remain the same for units when Prone until pinned status is lifted.

2.2.5.2.2 Crawling

If unit falls prone before 1st FTMP it is considered crawling and can move up to one hex in the turn on 2nd FTMP."

According to me, prone units should mainly be spotted at shorter distance than standing ones, according to the devastated landscape we kindly name "clear"

Prone unit get's +2 DRM for spotting roll. Pinned for instance get's only +1.

By the way, isn't that clear? I think the landscape is quite clear, bit muddy but definetly clear of trees and some other living creatures (except of poppies).

If you go to Verdun, you shall see the lanscape is still so tormented ( ie : cratered in every place that nature reconquered ) that "clear" doesn't mean much in this corner of France
