20th Century Warfare and Casualties in The Great War

Some considerations on the aspect of Casualties. Referring to "The Somme".

Overall, wast majority of the casualties were build up under Machine Gun and Artillery fire. Neutralizing artillery barrage was directed against advancing troops on no mans land and first trenches. Machine gun fire formed crossing fire lines that made retreat as deadly option as forward progress.

Point of note: Pre-planned, well established MG defensive fire lines may be formed by scenario defensive player in great secrecy. If fire lines are broken due any reson (eliminated participant, voluntarily abandoning fire line), MG fire may be redirected to new target. MG fire lines have benefit to gain attack roll against any enemy unit that passes through MG fire line during the entire turn. Multiple MG's may combine their firepower on "cross fire" hexes, that is, hex where two fire lines meet. MG fire lines are revealed when unit becomes target of one. Well sighted fire line will allow DRM for spotting rolls.

Preliminary barrage was largely ineffective - or did not reach expected effect of destruction as expected by high command. Later on barrage function turned away from attempt to eliminate enemy positions to rather suppress and neutralize enemy positions during the assault. It was evident that even an long term artillery concentration did not affect deep dugouts of the opposing line.
