British MG dropshots and MG Barrage

It seems that the MG "dropshots theory" was put in practice by British Heavy MG's in several occasions. However, it would require massed MG's to form an single hex of MG Barrage and I am not quite sure of the effectiveness even though the idea is intriguing.

It seems that though this was used by British Expeditionary Force, it was not effective and reason for this practice was the unwillingness of the MG crews to stand up on the front lines of the assault more than practical implications.

It also seems that though it was used, over million shots would be required to gain any degree of effect (according to one source (BEF Tactics on Western Front)) and on it was most useful during night time and at the time of troop transfers.
